Incontinence is not a disease in itself but may be a symptom of a wide variety of illnesses or injury. Prostate cancer, multiple scleroses, or a spinal cord injury are just a few of the conditions that may cause incontinence. Your doctor will be able to make a diagnosis and recommend a treatment plan.

Although not necessarily all inclusive, the descriptions below do provide some understanding of the more common recommended solutions.

Medical Solutions

Non-Surgical Therapy

Behavioral Therapy – Behavioral measures such as voiding chart, bladder training and pelvic floor exercises may be useful. They may help re-establish normal voiding and improve minor degrees of urge or stress incontinence.

Pharmacologic Therapy – There are a number of drug therapies your Doctor may recommend that may assist with your incontinence problem. Please consult your Physician for a full understanding of these options.

Electrical Stimulation – Stimulation via internal probes or skin sensor causes the pelvic muscles to contract. This may help give greater awareness of the pelvic muscles. Your Doctor can advise you if this is a possible course of action.

Surgical Therapy

Urethral Injections –“Bulking Agents” - ( additional information ) - Injection of substances to restore outlet resistance or urethral coaptation have been used for years. Two of the most utilized agents are Teflon paste and GAX collagen. Your Doctor can tell you whether or not this course of action is appropriate for you.

Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS) - ( additional information )– An AUS is an artificial device implanted with in the body. Discuss with your physician to find out if this is a viable option for you.

Urethral Slings - ( additional information ) –The sling procedure has gained popularity in the management of female incontinence (to a lesser extent in males) due to urethral sphincter weakness. Discuss with your Doctor if this is an appropriate surgical procedure for you.Other Surgical Procedures – Because there are many options that your doctor can recommend please refer to “Supporting Organizations” page for further information about optional surgical procedures.

Management Solutions
